The Philippines
The Republic of the Philippines is an island nation located in Southeast Asia, with Manila as its capital city. The Philippine Archipelago comprises 7,107 islands in the Western Pacific, located south of Mainland China, north of Indonesia, and east of the Malaysian Peninsula. The Philippines is the world's 12th most populous country, with a population of approximately 91 million as of July 2007.
The Philippines is arguably the most Western of all Asian countries. The Philippine Islands became a Spanish colony during the 16th century, and were ceded to the United States in 1898 following the Spanish-American War, becoming the only significant colony in U.S. history. The country became independent in 1946, but its people have kept close ties with the U.S. ever since. Because of the American influence, English is an official language along with Filipino, almost all educated Filipinos are fluent in English, and English-language media (newspapers, books, radio, television) is widespread, making the country an excellent source for offshore outsourcing services.
Makati City
The greater Manila area, also known as the National Capital Region (NCR), is the business, government, media, shopping, education and entertainment capital of the Philippines. Its residential population of 11.3 million makes it the 19th most populous metropolitan area in the world, and the largest in Southeast Asia. Some estimates suggest that the NCR's population swells to 16 million during each workday. The NCR is composed of 16 cities, each of which is governed by a mayor.
Makti City is the Central Business District (CBD) of the NCR, and thus all of the Philippines. With a full-time population of approximately 450,000 that grows to well over a million people during workdays, Makati is a first-world zone of high-tech skyscrapers with broadband Internet connections, air conditioned mega malls featuring well-known retailers, and world-class hotels. First-time visitors often are astounded to find familiar features not expected in a developing Asian country, ranging from Starbucks to Dunkin Donuts, McDonalds to Wendy's, Friendly's to TGI Friday's, the GAP to Zara, with everyone speaking English.
MangoStrategy's Research Center is located within the Makati Central Business District (CBD) of the NCR, and thus de facto financial capital for the country as a whole. It is also a transportation hub that allows MangoStrategy staff easy access to the MangoStrategy Research Center.
